Two common UMF sidebars options are the manual sidebar menus on the original Marketing sites (e.g. https://www.umf.maine.edu/campus-life/) and the simpler, automatic sidebar menu of former www2 sites (e.g. https://www.umf.maine.edu/careers/). The difference between them is just which widgets are in the Primary Sidebar widget area.

To add the original, manual menus:

  1. Go to Appearances > Menus
  2. Click “create a new menu,” call it “[Department Name] Sidebar,” and add pages and other menu items as needed. Do not select a display location under Menu Settings.
  3. Create another menu “Related Link” if wanted and add menu items
  4. Go to Appearances > Widgets and choose Primary Sidebar
  5. Remove the Pages widget if it exists (this is the one that automatically generates the page menu on former www2 sites)
  6. Drag the Navigation Menu widget to the Primary Sidebar and use these settings
    1. Title = [Department Name]
    2. Select Menu = [Department Name] Sidebar (i.e. whatever you called the new menu in step 2)
    3. Save
  7. Repeat step 6 for a “Related Links” menu widget, if wanted
  8. Add a Search widget to Primary Sidebar above those two menus, if wanted

To go in the other direction (using the www2-style auto menu) instead:

  1. Go to Appearances > Widgets and choose Primary Sidear
  2. Remove any widgets you don’t want (which would be all of them for the true www2 experience…)
  3. Drag the Pages widget to the Primary Sidebar
  4. Set “Sort by” to Page Order
  5. To exclude pages from the auto menu, see this page: Pages Menu Widget
